of dreams and english things

I had a friend in college named Jason.

We had plans to visit England and do a bunch of literature-inspired things.

We were going to run in the moors, while I shouted “Heathcliff!” and he shouted “Catherine!”

We were going to search out 221B Baker Street.

We were going to visit Wessex and milk cows.

We were going to smoke pipes at The Eagle and Child pub.

We were going to do so many more things that now I cannot seem to remember.

That’s what happens when you don’t follow through with your dreams and plans and goals. You end up with a bunch of blank space where there should be exciting, inspiring memories.

10 points to the person who can tell me the literary significance/reference behind each of these without using the links.

  1. 1. Heathcliff running on the moors... WUTHERING HEIGHTS. (A novel by Emily Bronte.)
    2. 221B Baker Street is the home of Sherlock Holmes. (A series of novels by Arthur Conan Doyle.)
    3. Wessex is the area in THE MAYOR OF CASTORBRIDGE (and other novels by Thomas Hardy).
    4. The Eagle & Child Pub is where C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkein, and the other Inklings met to discuss writing and life (and where I used to drink Guinness while doing a post-doc in Oxford).
    5. Amanda Luedeke is the woman who IS going to follow through on her dreams and plans and goals, so as to achieve the life she wants (and create really good memories).
    How'm I doing?

  3. 10 Points for Chip MacGregor!!
I was originally thinking of TESS OF THE D'URBERVILLES for #3 (she's a milk maid for a bit), but MAYOR OF CASTORBRIDGE is equally amazing, so brava!

    I especially like #5. :)

  4. The "Wessex and milk cows" one baffled me. I'm hoping that one was more obscure than the others, that way I don't feel like a total idiot when I click the link.

And, for what it matters, I think you will follow through on your dreams. :)

  5. You didn't miss much with 221B; it's not actually there. There is, however, a gift shop a little bit down the street from where 221B would be.

And the Eagle and Child was absolutely incredible. Get the fish & chips.

Also, you should let your husband get Firefly.
